Hi mate, i used to glide a lot when i was in the army, havent done it now in ages tho,, apart from last night when a guy came up me hill where we buggy n got his out, he`s doin a pilots test today, dont know which one but he seems very inexperienced,, so i blagged a go off him n launched the bloody great thing up, he`s got the larger chute for powered flights, felt amazin to be back under a canopy,, so much so that im seriously considering gettin back into it

Sounds like we've got one of the re-converted
I don't fancy the powered flight like your man is going for. Several thousand feet up with a great big propeller strapped to my back Alan |

I fancied it too, as did Bill. We would certainly give it a go when we get fitter (not fatter)
We also thought of buying one of those microlights a good few years back, not as exhilirating as paragliding though. I have been on a glider, that was good fun, over in Germany. I'm like you Gaz, not sure of rules about licences etc. would be good to find out. JoJo |

Well you don't need a licence, (yet), but I would suggest getting one if you want to seriously try it. Look at www.bhpa.co.uk for a list of schools, or JoJo/Bill there is Cloudbusters that use Tinto near you guys.
I could look out the number if you want. I would offer to give you a shot of mine, but it would be like you letting me, a novice, l loose with a top end racing kite. Not a pretty sight Alan |

I am extremely safety conscious, so no worries about trying out your gear.
Thanks for the info, I will bear Cloudbusters in mind for future reference. I didn't realise there was something so close, the place we saw was in Edinburgh. JoJo |

lol at re-converted,, thing is matey both kites n chutes are the same,, all be it we fly these things facin em whilst you (and me) fly the big boys facin away from em, the reason i stopped flyin was cos the army were payin for me to do it,, spent just over 2 years instructing skiing in the winter n then flyin off the same mountains in Bavaria n Austriain the summer,
as for the powered option, nah that aint for me either,, nothing beats the pure silence at 6600ft the only noise is ur clothes rippling in the wind, its stunning guys,,the launchin is as adrenalin filled, and scary,as drivin at 150mph,n after last nights play i`ve done nothing but think about it again,,all i need is a refresher course, get re-registered,re-insured n get a grand or so of flyin stuff,,, sounds a lot but the thrill of the jump is worth it,, wonder why i aint done it before,,,,so heres the thing,, if i can fly both then so can you lol,, one day hook up wiv us lot n we`ll show you the power these things have ,, its totally diff than the canopies, much sharper n as the power is transmitted up the arm n not directly into the harness as in gliding it`ll make ya jump lol,, i`ll do yours if you do mine pmsl |

Condor: Had a look into it, but looked to be to expensive.
Ok, the gear is going to cost, but it was the 1000 (or just under) the it was going to cost to obtain a licence. You say that you don't need one? I've only seen info that gives the imperssion that you must have at least a Club Pilot Licence. If all the courses and apparent licences are just a method of extracting cash, then I'd rather learn the basics, then hook up with an experienced pilot to continue the learning process. Anyone tried to fly a paraglider sail from the ground (ala kite)? |

Scud,
Just to fill you in, Condor met up with us last Saturday at Lanark Racecourse. He's already taken the plunge in to traction kiting, as he has a Super 10. Him and his better half had a go of a few of my kites, and both enjoyed them. His better half being the first time on handling any power kite and did brilliantly, to the extent that when she had her first go of the S10, it was easy for her. ( I think it was her first go, although she picked it up that quick maybe it wasn't) Hope to meet them again soon, and to take a look at Alan's REAL kite...LOL and no I wouldnt take the chance of it until, I was fitter and after being taught by a professional. But its something I have wanted to do myself for years, just never had the fitness. Regards Bill |

I was under the same impression as Freeclimber. When I've looked into it on various sites, they all seemed to say you needed to get to a certain level before you were allowed to fly solo. One site I found did do a tandem tryout for about 99 which isn't bad.

Hi,
I should clarify to liecense issue for you guys. There is no law at present that says you need to have offical training or liecense. The EU look like they are about to change this. I know a few pilots that started out this way, but soon found it was benifical to go the offical route. The insurance is the main thing. If anyone does take up paragliding, please follow the proper route. I've seen to many accidents involving non-trained pilots. You can get taster days for about 100 including BHPA membership and insurance. You'll get solo and tandam flights on this. Even better Hey Bill It was her first shot and I think she's as hooked as me now. Thats the christmas presents sorted I'll be bringing my Super 10 and Paragliding along with me from now on. Cheers Alan |

Re: Licence | ||

Just a further note on paragliding licences, I've noticed that people selling s/h paragliders say that the buyer must produce their licence in order to complete the sale.
Is this just people being responsible or is it a statutory requirement? Maybe there should be a similiar system for power kites. It'd stop a people making expensive purchasing errors, as well as providing a show of responsibility for the authorities....should I just set fire to myself now or wait to be flamed? |
