Strange, and some of those other domain names it lists as available were also owned by Coastguard too, wonder if they've folded, or just been caught out and not renewed their names in time?

Me too, I used them for nearly all my gear as I was building my kit up, and recommended them lots too. I haven't been in contact with them for a while as I haven't needed anything.
Doubt I could email Phil and ask either, as his email address was at the now defunct @coastguard-kites domain. It does sound like another shop has succumbed to market forces. |

Just searched on that other forum, and apparently it's true, they've gone under. Sounds like Phil lost the bug too, as one post said he went to a kite meet, but didn't have any kites, and had sold his buggy (could be to raise funds I guess though).
Here's a link to the thread. |

Yep they long gone!
So have:- Mullin Kites Kite Dynamic The Kite Shop Cambridge Zoo Kites Snetterton Market Now selling more cloths than kites is Airboss so I hear, even though they have a club of their own! I know of another kite shop that doesn't stock anything over 4m to help keep overheads low. Chilli Kites is struggling as I am at County Kites, fortunately I have both other kite related interests and a day job to keep the wolf from the door! Certain retailers are seriously undercutting to retain business, they have to be getting support from certain manufacturers to sell at the prices they are! Kite sports are a long way off becoming a growth industry, even though the number of kiters is increasing... with out that certain brand and their support it's not a good trade to be in! Check the website to see what we are about http://www.countykites.co.uk

It could be a case, as with the computer industry over the last few years, that the market is reaching saturation point.
What I mean is, when you are new, and building your kit up, you'll buy a fair bit of stuff. Once you're set up, you don't go buying kites every other week, only the occasion maintenance stuff, so unless you get new customers, sales will dwindle, as people have all the stuff they need. You'll get some upgrading, but still not buying as often as when they're getting their kit together. Maybe it's a case of most people having what they need now, and not so many coming into it. I know in our area it seems to have died lately, you don't see anywhere near the number of kites on the beach you did a year or so ago. |
